Grandfather Mountain Blue Ridge Pkwy
W. Kerr Scott Reservoir
Beautiful Wilkes County is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Parkway which is only a short scenic drive away. We are also located near the Boone/Blowing Rock area and skiing in Banner Elk, and just minutes to Winston-Salem and Charlotte east of Wilkes County. When you come to our area, you will see why so many people are coming here to live full-time or to build second homes – the property here is affordable and convenient, the weather is mild in winter and we have great views of the mountains. You don't have to go to Boone/Blowing Rock and pay the outrageous prices they are charging to live there when you can be here with equal beauty, a more convenient location, milder winters and spectacular scenery. It's a great place to raise a family and to live in peace and harmony, away from the hustle and bustle of larger cities. The people are friendly, the atmosphere is wholesome, but yet we offer culture, arts, entertainment, festivities and a host of diversions that make this a place you will love to call home.
W. Kerr Scott Reservoir
The spectacular W. Kerr Scott Reservoir is pristine and serene – if you want boating, swimming, camping, fishing and picnicking, this is the place to be! No overdevelopment here, our community strives to keep the tranquility that draws you here to start with! The dam was constructed for flood control and resulted in a spectacular lake. Take a deep breath and relax, feel the stress melt away….
Stone Mountain State Park has a dramatic 600 foot granite dome and offers more than 13,000 acres of mountain beauty and a variety of outdoor activities. There you will find camping, picnic shelters, fishing in the beautiful Bull Head Creek, horseback riding, rock climbing, 17 miles of walking trails, waterfalls – everything you could want for an enjoyable outdoor experience and just minutes from town.
Art, Cultural Facilities and just plain fun!
We have a fabulous art gallery, and Merlefest draws thousands of people from all over the world to hear some of the best bluegrass on the planet featuring Doc Watson and many other very well known entertainers. County Fair is a blast with rides and excitement. The Old Wilkes County Courthouse offers the Wilkes Heritage Tour to fill you in on the history of Wilkes County and a walking tour, and Moravian Falls has a great family campground with fishing and swimming and only five minutes to town.
The John A. Walker Community Center brings in well known entertainers including the late Ray Charles, Dionne Warwick and others. This beautiful facility has 17,000 square feet of multi-purpose meeting space used for management training and business meetings, with an 1,130 seat performing arts auditorium to accommodate a variety of cultural activies including plays, concerts, gospel sings, exhibits and festivals. Speaking of festivals, we have the Apple Festival featuring the world famous apples of the Brushy Mountains that is held the first Saturday in October of every year – it's a lot of fun, be sure to check it out when you come.
Don't miss the lighting of the Christmas tree in downtown North Wilkesboro and come to see Santa Claus! For exercise and health, take a walk on the Yadkin Greenway, a beautiful, scenic paved walking trail which follows the river - you can also ride your bike or roller skate! We have a great new YMCA and many other places to work out. This is just to name a few – there are many more things to see and do here – I just don't have the space!
Wilkes County is now where I call home– I have lived in Winston-Salem for 20+ years, I lived in Palm Springs, California for 4 ½ years, and I lived in Monterey, California on the beautiful Monterey Bay for 16 years. I have lived many places, but I gotta tell you, this is the place where my soul is at peace. Now when I drive to Winston-Salem or Charlotte, or when I go back to California, I can't wait to leave and get back home. When I get in these beautiful mountains, I just feel so good and so will you. Please give me a call or send me an email – I can help you with any home or property on the market in Wilkes County, even other company's listings. I don't think you will be disappointed!
